1. Introduction

LifeBoat (“we,” “our,” “us,” or the “Service”) is a Chrome browser extension for digital account management and estate planning. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our Service.

By installing or using LifeBoat, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with the terms of this Privacy Policy, please do not install or use the Service.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information Stored Locally on Your Device

The following data is stored locally in your browser and encrypted with your master password:

Account credentials and login information you choose to save
Vault contents (passwords, 2FA codes, secure notes)
Trusted contact information (names, email addresses)
User preferences and settings

This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly enable cloud sync (Pro feature).

2.2 Information Transmitted to Our Servers

For registered users, we collect:

Email address: For account authentication and communication
Encrypted vault backups: If you enable cloud sync (Pro users only). These are encrypted on your device before transmission; we cannot decrypt this data.
Subscription and billing status: Managed through Stripe; we do not store payment card details

2.3 Information We Do NOT Collect

Browsing history or browsing activity
Cookies or tracking identifiers
Unencrypted passwords or credentials
Government identification documents
Biometric data
Location data

2.4 Automatically Collected Information

We may collect anonymized, aggregated usage statistics such as:

Feature usage patterns (not tied to individual users)
Error reports and crash logs
General geographic region (country-level only)

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

Provide, maintain, and improve the Service
Process transactions and manage subscriptions
Send transactional emails (account verification, password resets)
Send notifications to your designated trusted contacts when triggered
Respond to customer support inquiries
Comply with legal obligations

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties.

4. Zero-Knowledge Architecture

LifeBoat uses a zero-knowledge encryption architecture:

Your master password is never transmitted to or stored on our servers
All sensitive data is encrypted on your device using AES-256-GCM encryption with PBKDF2 key derivation (310,000 iterations)
We cannot access, read, or decrypt your vault contents
If you lose your master password, we cannot recover your data

5. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party service providers:

6. Data Retention

Local data: Retained until you delete it or uninstall the extension
Account data: Retained while your account is active
Post-deletion: Account data is deleted within 30 days of account deletion request
Backups: Encrypted backups may be retained for up to 90 days for disaster recovery purposes

7. Data Security

We implement reasonable administrative, technical, and physical security measures to protect your information, including:

End-to-end encryption for sensitive data
TLS/HTTPS for all data transmission
Regular security assessments
Access controls and authentication requirements

However, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.

8. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:

Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
Correction: Request correction of inaccurate personal data
Deletion: Request deletion of your personal data
Portability: Export your data in a machine-readable format
Opt-out: Unsubscribe from marketing communications

8.1 California Residents (CCPA)

California residents have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act. We do not sell personal information. To submit a request, contact privacy@lifeboat.app.

If you are in the European Economic Area, you have additional rights under GDPR, including the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.

9. Children’s Privacy

LifeBoat is not intended for use by individuals under the age of 13 (or 16 in certain jurisdictions). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child, we will take steps to delete that information.

10. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by:

Posting the updated policy with a new “Last Updated” date
Sending an email notification (for registered users)
Displaying an in-app notification

Your continued use of the Service after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.

11. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR COMPLETELY SECURE. YOU USE THE SERVICE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

12. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL LIFEBOAT, ITS DEVELOPERS, AFFILIATES, OR SERVICE PROVIDERS BE LIABLE FOR:

ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES
ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, USE, GOODWILL, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES
ANY UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS TO OR ALTERATION OF YOUR DATA
ANY DAMAGES RESULTING FROM YOUR RELIANCE ON THE SERVICE
ANY MATTERS BEYOND OUR REASONABLE CONTROL

OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIMS ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO THE SERVICE SHALL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US, IF ANY, IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM, OR FIFTY DOLLARS ($50), WHICHEVER IS GREATER.

SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF CERTAIN DAMAGES, SO SOME OF THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

13. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless LifeBoat, its developers, and affiliates from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, or expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising out of or related to:

Your use or misuse of the Service
Your violation of this Privacy Policy or any applicable laws
Your violation of any third-party rights
Any content you store or transmit through the Service

14. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution

This Privacy Policy shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.

Any dispute arising from this Privacy Policy or your use of the Service shall be resolved through binding arbitration in accordance with the rules of the American Arbitration Association, except that either party may seek injunctive relief in any court of competent jurisdiction.

YOU AGREE TO WAIVE ANY RIGHT TO A JURY TRIAL OR TO PARTICIPATE IN A CLASS ACTION.

15. Severability

If any provision of this Privacy Policy is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision shall be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect.
